Positioning of the Keyboard

It is crucial to place the computer keyboard in a neutral, flat position so that the fingers can type. This can be achieved in many ways. You can place your keyboard on a tray with a negative slope and height adjustment that attaches to a desk or table. This type of product is available from several manufacturers. Another way to use a keyboard is by placing it on a surface at your elbow height when you're seated.

Be sure to use straight hands when typing. This method can be used for short periods. The downside is that as the forearms get tired, the wrists start to drop to the ground, and the hands are forced upwards on the keyboard keys. This can lead to wrist problems.

When you're using a laptop computer to work, lay the laptop on your lap and place your hands on the keyboard. A one-handed keyboard is a good option if you have limited mobility or a weak hand.


Positioning of the Mouse

Use a computer mouse to position it close to your body. Make sure your keyboard platform has a mouse platform.

A mouse platform that can be moved slightly higher than the keyboard keys is best. The mouse will automatically position your hand in the neutral position when you are holding it.
You don't need to reach for the mouse from your side or bend your arm to use it. Unsightly arm positions can cause pain in the wrist, neck, shoulder, elbow and elbow.

Consider other import devices if you have trouble using a mouse. Consider a trackball if you have trouble using the mouse. A trackball is less sensitive than a computer mouse to hand shaking.

Consider using a multitouch pad like an iGesture pad if you use the zoom features of your software often to view what is on the computer screen. Multi-touch pads make it easier to control the zoom.

While you work, place the computer screen in front of your face. As you are sitting down, extend your arms straight out in front of your face. Your fingers should touch the screen at the centre.

This position ensures that the computer screen is at the proper height and distance from your eyes. It also focuses on your body. To avoid screen flickering, you should use an LCD screen instead of a CRT.

A laptop computer screen should be positioned at an optimal viewing height. Your computer screen should not be reflected in any part of the work area. Your computer screen should be placed away from any un-shaded windows. To reduce the glare of reflected light, blinds or drapes can be used to cover your computer screen.

To make it easier to read the computer screen, ensure that the computer is correctly placed at an arm's length from your eyes. You can change the default font size of your computer's operating systems to make it larger. A screen magnifier can be attached to the monitor's top. This is a better option than sitting too close. Choose screen colours that are easy to read and see.


Positioning of the Documents
Place the documents near the computer screen. A document holder should be adjustable in height and position. The document holder should be placed between the keyboard, the computer screen or on one side. Do not place documents you intend to use while typing on the work surface.


Room Lighting
To see your computer screen clearly, the room lighting should not be too bright. To be able to read paper documents without straining your eyes, however, you will need to use a supplemental task lamp.

You want a chair that is comfortable and has a back that you can rest on for long periods of time. You should be able to comfortably sit on the chair under your keyboard tray or desk. If possible, the arms of the chair should not restrict your ability to adjust your workspace or sit down.

The chair must support the entire body, including the lower back. Consider using a low-back cushion or a towel to support your back if the chair is not providing adequate support.

If your chair becomes too uncomfortable (e.g. ‘hard') consider purchasing a gel chair seat cushion.

When seated at the computer, place your feet on the ground or on a support surface. Do not leave your feet exposed to the elements.

Rest Breaks
It can be exhausting to work at a computer. After 20-50 minutes of work, take a break. It is refreshing to take a two-minute break after work. Take a two-minute break to stretch, get up and move about to increase blood circulation. Finally, look out the window or to the distance to take a rest.
